on academia, teaching, work, & independence
[based on this twitter thread]
thinking about my future in academia. on the one hand, i love working with students. and on the other, so much hoop jumping, hierarchy, bureaucracy, resource-hoarding, gatekeeping, decorum, and EMAIL. there are other ways to teach & learn & build learning communities.
oof. i just get tired of creating all these lessons, seminars, craft talks, prompts/exercises, and other writing-related learning activities—and being expected to only use them for institutions. and how the university system takes over your time/energy overall.
i'm reflecting on how i'd like more creative and scholarly as well as financial independence. i'm thinking of places like @TSP_Writing, @CatapultStory, as well as writers who offer their own online (or, pre-COVID, also in-person) workshops. i’m dreaming of ways to set more of my own fees/rates. more of my own goals. on my own terms.
