to my nonblack asian friends, family, community

nonblack asians it is time/beyond time to practice antiracism & solidarity in CONCRETE & ONGOING ways. protest & support communities gathering to protest the police murders of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Tony McDade, and Ahmaud Arbery, among others. support organizers working to defund the police in Minneapolis, Louisville, Tallahassee, your own city.

resources on recognizing/resisting antiblackness & solidarity-building for nonblack asians

if you can, donate—

to bail funds, to local black-led activist orgs, to individual black queer & trans people’s venmos, gofundme’s, patreons, etc. if you can: set up recurring donations to orgs & individual people. every bit helps. a recurring donation of $5 a month is amazing. esp when you also encourage your friends & community to do the same!

join—

local orgs that are led by your community (but don’t take up space that isn’t yours!); protests (but don’t take up space that isn’t yours!). ask what you can contribute. LISTEN. ask whose voices are being centered/point out erasures. LISTEN.

learn—

from critiques. apologize for missteps without re-centering your feelings. change your approach when critiqued & from your own reflection. don’t assume knowledge that isn’t yours. educate yourself instead of expecting intellectual & emotional labor from black people

talk—

to your nonblack asian friends, your family about antiblackness and how to do actively antiracist work. be specific. don’t say POC when you’re talking about black people, history, art, struggle, activism. speak up when you witness antiblack speech/behavior

if you teach (in any form, any field)—

teach more work by black scholars, writers, artists. always provide context & tools for deep engagement. don’t tokenize. attend antiracism workshops & talks. create antiracism workshops & talks. LISTEN to black teachers, staff, students

check in—

with your black friends, colleagues, neighbors. listen. listen. listen.
